Leon Edwards will be looking to become Britain’s second UFC champion this weekend when Birmingham fighter Kamaru challenges Usman in a welterweight rematch.
Jamaican-born Edwards was surpassed by Usman in 2015 as the Nigerian raced towards the title at 170 pounds. Usman, 35, finally clinched the belt in 2019 and has since retained it five straight times, extending his winning streak to a remarkable 19 bouts.
Last time out, Usman (20-1) beat Colby Covington on points to defend the gold against the American for a second time. The Nigerian Nightmare has also recorded two successful defenses against Jorge Masvidal, prompting the champion to declare that he is “lapping” the opposition.
A second win over Edwards (19-3, 1 no contest) would take that point home but the Brit is in fine form having won nine straight fights since losing to Usman. Most recently, Edwards, 30, trumped fan favorite Nate Diaz with a dominant performance in June 2021.
