UK bans imports of Russian caviar, silver and other high-value products – POLITICO

LONDON – The UK has imposed an import ban on Russian caviar as part of a new installment of sanctions against Vladimir Putin’s regime over the war in Ukraine.

The British government announced import bans on Russian silver, timber products and luxury goods on Thursday. The latest measures will also mean that tariffs on around £130million worth of Russian and Belarusian products, including diamonds and rubber, will rise by 35 percentage points.

Announcing the sanctions, Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan said the UK “continues to stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine”.

“We are using every opportunity to increase pressure to isolate Russia’s economy, and these further measures will tighten the screws and close lucrative avenues of financing Putin’s war machine,” she said.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak said the “significant sanctions” would bring the UK’s total import tariffs and bans on Russian goods to more than £1 billion and “inflict further economic pain on Putin’s economy over his barbaric and unjust attacks on a sovereign nation”.

Earlier Thursday, the UK targeted a number of Russian generals and defense contractors involved in the war in Ukraine in its latest round of sanctions.

The UK has already banned the import of iron and steel products from Russia and Belarus, stopping the export of luxury goods to Russia, among other things. UK bans imports of Russian caviar, silver and other high-value products - POLITICO
