Drivers in the UK are being warned they could face a £1,000 fine for a simple mistake many make when shifting gears.

Rule 122 of the Highway Code states: “Coast, a term used to describe a vehicle coasting or driving with the clutch depressed, may affect driver control.”

“This forces a small amount of fuel to be sent to the engine as the car is not getting the torque it needs from the wheels, rather than getting that power directly from the wheels.”
