UK has 5th most affordable broadband in the world

New research shows the most affordable countries broadband and the UK ranked 5th.
Experts at Uswitch analyzed the average cost of broadband per month vs average monthly income per capita in OECD countries, which determines the overall cost of broadband as a percentage of income and reveals which countries have the most (& least) affordable broadband.

OECD countries with the most affordable broadband
The UK comes in at 5th place in terms of broadband affordability. The UK found an average monthly broadband cost of £26.39, compared with an average monthly income (per capita) of £2,266, meaning broadband comes at a cost of income average is 1.16%.
While a monthly broadband subscription can be as low as £8.71 per month in some countries, when we take into account local income potential, Israel ranks as the best priced country in the world. most affordable, with the average broadband package costing only 0.78% of average monthly income.
In second place is Lithuania, where the monthly Internet cost is £10.13 and accounts for just under 1% of average monthly income. France comes in at third place, with a monthly broadband plan equal to 1.14% of average monthly income of £2,132.
The study also revealed the OECD countries with the most affordable broadband:
Colombia’s broadband was ranked as the least affordable, where the average monthly broadband cost totaled £18.69, accounting for 5.63% of income. While the cost itself may not be high compared to many other countries, the fact that incomes are so low in the country makes it the place with the lowest broadband prices.

- The country with the fastest internet speeds overall is Chile, with an average download speed of 189.36 Mbps, while the slowest is Turkey (26.34 Mbps).
- UK internet speed is 26th with 61.69 Mbps.

“It is interesting to see that the UK is only 26th in terms of average download speeds, well below average compared to the top ranking country Chile. Download speeds in the UK mean that it will take 3 minutes 15 seconds to download a 1500MB movie, while in Chile it only takes 1 minute 3 seconds to download a movie of the same size. These numbers prove that the UK still has a long way to go to deliver fast and reliable speeds.
“On the plus side, the UK ranks 5th for broadband affordability, showing that we have access to a wide range of competitive deals, with an average monthly broadband fee of 26, £39 per month. In other words, the average monthly UK broadband fee is 1.16% of the average monthly income.
