LONDON – Britain has imposed sanctions on the Wagner Group, a Russian private military company reportedly tasked with the assassination of Ukraine’s president.

The last round of 65 sanctionsannounced on Thursday are the latest the UK has imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

Britain added arms company and drone maker Kronshtadt to its list of targets; Alrosa, the Russian diamond mining company; the private bank Alfa and five other Russian banks as well as the Russian Railways.

The new package of sanctions also affects individuals, including billionaire oil tycoon Eugene Shvidler; Founder of Tinkoff Bank Oleg Tinkov; Herman Gref, CEO of Russia’s largest bank Sberbank; Didier Casimiro, first vice president of oil company Rosneft; and Polina Kovaleva, daughter of a woman believed to be in a romantic relationship with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Galina Danilchenko, who Russia has appointed as the new “mayor” of the Ukrainian city of Melitopol, has also been placed on the British sanctions list. This is the first time a person has been sanctioned for working with Russian forces currently in Ukraine.

Sanctioned UK companies and individuals have had their assets frozen and cannot do business with UK citizens or companies. Individuals are also subject to a travel ban restricting their travel to or from the UK.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, who was in Brussels for a series of high-level meetings with Prime Minister Boris Johnson, said: “These oligarchs, corporations and hired thugs are complicit in the murder of innocent civilians and it is right that they are paying the price. ” UK imposes sanctions on mercenaries helping Russia in Ukraine - POLITICO
