UK Meteor Network receives 200 reports of mysterious fireballs

More than 200 reports of a mysterious ‘fireball’ over Britain and Ireland were made last night.

The UK Meteor Network received reports from people who saw the “ball of fire” crossing the night sky in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

At 9:00pm last night, calls began to be received about the sighting.

The network said it was “investigating to determine what the object was, meteor or space junk,” adding that most of the reports had come from Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Video footage of the fireball was captured and posted on social media.

Danny Nell, 21, was walking his dog in Johnstone, west of Paisley and Glasgow when he saw the fireball.

“I was walking my dog and strangely it was 10pm sharp and I just saw the lightning in the sky and I pulled out my phone and picked it up,” the Glasgow resident told the PA news agency.

“I thought at first it might be fireworks because there was a lot of Scottish football on but I quickly realized that wasn’t the case and just grabbed my phone to see if I could catch it.”
