UK Education Minister Nadhim Zahawi called His “heart was broken” after seeing Will Smith punch comedian Chris Rock at the Academy Awards, but credited the actor for his apology.
“It’s heartbreaking when you lose control of your emotions like that,” Zahawi said on BBC Breakfast. “But I think it’s important not to allow himself to cross that line and he immediately apologized, which is good to see.”
Smith took to the stage at the awards in the early hours of Monday morning and slapped Rock – who was hosting the event – after insulting a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
Smith then shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.” He later apologized in his acceptance speech after winning the Best Actor Oscar, tearfully arguing, “Love makes you do crazy things. “
Zahawi said the incident “was hard on him [Smith] because it was someone making fun of his wife and her illness.”
Rock had singled out Pinkett Smith and joked that she should be in GI Jane II because of her shaved head, a reference to the buzzcut hairstyle worn by actress Demi Moore in the 1997 film. Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia and has spoken about her struggles with hair loss on her YouTube series Conversation at the Red Table.
The organization behind the Oscars, later the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brought out a statement saying, “It does not condone violence in any form.”
In a statement, the Los Angeles Police Department said it was “aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program,” but no police report had been filed.
