Brits are set for a frosty start to Tuesday but temperatures will rise early in the day and with a peak of 16°C it is likely to be warmer than the Costa Brava in Spain.

After a weekend of mixed wind and rain, a wave of more stable conditions is set for the UK this week, starting with some spells of sunshine on Monday.

And it is likely to warm again on Tuesday, especially in the south of the UK, where temperatures could drop into the teen years.

A northward moving high pressure front brings warmer conditions but how it warms depends on when it meets a depression coming in from the northwest.

On Tuesday morning it could go as low as -1C in central England and this will be a single metric low across the UK.

Temperatures could reach 16 degrees Celsius this week

BBC weather forecaster Matt Taylor said: “There could be frost anywhere but a bright enough start for many, some isolated showers through East Anglia and the Midlands, drifting. north through Yorkshire for the day.

“Much of England and Wales have varying amounts of sunshine, best in the morning. Some sunny east of Scotland, Northern Ireland, with individual showers.

“That’s west of Scotland and west of Northern Ireland where it’s going to be wetter, pretty windy for a while in the morning.

“Even so, that wind will help break the cloud over eastern Scotland.”

In sunshine, mild conditions can be expected and temperatures could be higher than some resorts in Spain including the Costa Brava, where it is less likely that the mercury will rise around 14 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

Mr Taylor said there would be a north-south split although in terms of temperature it could be in single digits in Scotland.
