Brits are being hit by torrential downpours and storms in the north of Britain, while the south is bathed in 23C highs from former Tropical Storm Alex.

It was a hot day for most of the country on Wednesday, with 23.5C, the high in Surbiton, south-west London, while there was also heavy and persistent rain and hail in central and northern Scotland throughout the day.

The Met Office issued thunderstorm warnings later in the day.

The outlook for today is a mild start with the best sunshine in central and southern England, while rain and cloud will move in from the west later in the day.

“Eventually the sunshine is nibbled away by clouds as it moves steadily east. There will be light rain and some foggy and cloudy conditions along the west-facing coasts. The highest temperatures where we see the best temperatures is around 22C,” said BBC Weather’s Louise Lear.

She warned those affected by hay fever that grass pollen was now at its peak when the sun was shining and that “very high pollen levels” should therefore be expected in the afternoon.

The unsettled and warm weather hitting the country later this week comes from ex-Tropical Storm Alex.

The storm caused heavy rain in Florida but by the time it makes its way across the Atlantic it will be less violent and the worst of the weather front may not hit northern Britain.

Heavy rainfall and gale force winds are expected for the northwest of the country

Nevertheless, heavy rain and gusty winds are expected on Friday.

Ms Lear continued: “The remnants of this storm are bringing some windy conditions to the far north and west, but also some warmth as it is a south west wind.

“We’re maintaining a pattern of showers and winds perhaps in excess of 40 or 50mph on exposed coasts but getting through with some sunshine across much of England and Wales, a breezy afternoon but warm with that.

“We could see highs of 23°C.”
