Brits are set for scorching temperatures today with highs of 24C, as well as gale force winds from ex-Tropical Storm Alex.

The Met Office is forecasting a split across the country due to low pressure from the ex-tropical storm bringing high winds and heavy rain to the UK’s north-west.

And at the same time in the southeast, away from the brunt of the storm but impacted by the hot air, temperatures could reach 24C on Friday.

Stormy weather and hot temperatures are expected at the weekend.

This week Wednesday was warm and sunny with a high of 23.5C in south west London, but Thursday saw more cloudiness resulting in a mild night.

“16C by dawn in the south-east, generally teenagers elsewhere maybe slightly lower in some sheltered spots,” said Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern.

“Bright start nonetheless as this weather front is moving east but a depression is approaching and this is a relatively deep depression for the time of year.

Heavy rain and gale force winds are forecast for Scotland

“So some unusually strong winds are developing on Friday and that means it’s a blustery start to the day and if there is some sunshine first then cloud will form by late morning and some showers will begin, one or two to be developed for parts of Wales in western and northern England.

“The most frequent and heaviest downpours will take place over Scotland and Northern Ireland, and it is also where the strongest winds will peak at gale force on the exposed coasts of the western islands.

More stormy conditions and rain are expected on Saturday

“This will make it feel chilly but still have the potential for high teens, low 20s elsewhere, particularly given a little shelter from the wind and given some light spells 24c possible there for London. And in the south and southeast it’s mostly dry and light, although there will be storms.”

Then the outlook for the weekend is fairly widespread showers, including some for southern England, as well as blustery conditions, but temperatures in the south east could still hit 22C.
