The Met Office has said the UK could climb to 23C today and climb further in the coming days before hitting the high 20C next week thanks to a North African cloud

Brits are set for muggy temperatures as they rise in the coming days and could hit the high 20C by next week.

The Met Office has said a high pressure system bringing hot air out of North Africa and across southern Europe could bring very high temperatures next week.

With mercury rising, it is expected to hit 23C in southern England today and then a few degrees warmer than Saturday’s 25C in the south east.

Thunderstorms are also possible on Saturday and Sunday night over the weekend.

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said: “Until Saturday night and Sunday when temperatures rise and the nice weather arrives.

The hot weather is brought by a North African cloud

“We have also been able to see some showers or thunderstorms drifting north from the continent, most likely affecting the southern part of the UK on Saturday evening and Sunday but perhaps spreading even more widely later on.

“At the same time if we get some sunshine and this cloud occurs temperatures could rise, early next week it is possible to see low to mid 20s and high 20s quite a bit in the south east if we get sunshine with this cloud but how As I mentioned earlier, it also brings with it the risk of thunderstorms breaking out.”

A low pressure coming off the Atlantic, bringing with it more volatile weather, will determine how much impact the hot air coming off the continent will have.

Mr McGivern continued: “In general, moderate to high average temperatures, moderate to high temperatures are intermittently possible next week, not for long, maybe a day or two until next week, mainly in the South East.”

However, today is expected to be a warm day with some rain showers across the west and north west of the UK.

Met Office forecaster Alex Deakin said: “It’s quite warm if you can get out of that breeze, 20C to 22C, maybe 23C in the south east.

“Certainly a bit warmer than in May. Further west and north west it can be a bit cooler with those showers and gusty winds, it won’t feel very comfortable at all.

“However, the rain is easing and turning into a few showers on Friday evening. It will be a beautiful Friday night for most with mostly clear skies.”
