According to a report, Ukrainian officials have detained a Russian agent tasked with gathering information on the locations of Ukraine’s armed forces.
Officers from the counterintelligence unit of the Security Services of Ukraine (SSU) arrested the Russian agent, codenamed 007, in the city of Zaporizhia. The SSU said in Wednesday’s report that the woman came to the city to work as a volunteer but was actually conducting a mission to identify the locations of the Ukrainian army.
According to the SSU, the woman was also tasked with making contact with Ukrainian soldiers to determine their deployment and movement routes. The agent had planned to share the information through an anonymous Telegram channel, but was arrested by Ukrainian officials.
The woman is now in custody on suspicion of high treason. The SSU said in the report that it carried out the operation under the supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Zaporizhia region.
Ukraine has doubled in detecting Russian espionage activities since the war began in February. Ukrainian officials on Monday arrested former SSU chief Roman Dudin in Kharkiv Oblast on suspicion of treason. His arrest was later confirmed by the press office of the State Investigative Bureau of Ukraine to the Ukrainska Pravda newspaper.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Dudin on May 29, initially for negligent performance of his duties. The President also promised that Ukrainian officials will investigate his case.
“There is perfect cooperation between the army, the police, the mayor of Kharkiv and the state administration of the region – they are all really working to bring our victory closer and they are doing it very effectively,” Zelenskyy said in a video address at the time.
“Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the local leadership of the Security Service of Ukraine. When I got here I looked into it and fired the head of security in the area for selfishly looking after his own interests rather than working to defend the city from the first days of the full blown war. Law enforcement officials will find out what his motives were,” he added.
Kharkiv was one of the first regions to fall to the Russians at the beginning of the war. Ukraine is now working to retake occupied territories in the region.
