A Ukrainian man who captained a ship on Lough Foyle is said to have lost his wife, daughter and mother in a bomb blast during Russia’s invasion of the country.
The man is understood to be the captain of a ship docked at Lough Foyle this week, halfway between Derry and Donegal.
The chairman of the Green Party in Donegal, Michael White, said the incident highlights the reality of events in Ukraine and spreading effects.
Mr. White said in recent days the man docked at Lough Foyle received word that his wife, daughter and mother had been killed by a Russian bomb.
“This is a war situation we are in so I just wanted to point out that there is a ship in Lough Foyle where I live and the Ukrainian captain of that ship and he found out that his wife, mother and his daughter died in a bomb by the Russians,” Mr. White told Highland Radio.
The captain is expected to return to Ukraine in the coming days.
“So that was just to put things in context and that guy was trying to fly back to Belfast airport to go back to his home, so we were in a war situation, and I thought we need to start thinking about how serious this is,” he said.
Mr. White also said the problem of rising fuel costs was due to supply and demand issues.
“So going to the specific problems we have with the fuel, it’s going to have to be a lot more to try and get it under control,” he said.
“The vast majority of people in the Northwest go and get to work and school by car. But this is not just an Irish problem, it’s a whole Europe problem and basically the problem we have now is supply.”
“The market is down, prices are up, the supply problem can be fixed if the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia increase production and can increase if Venezuela and Iraq continue. So those are big problems we can’t control that can be fixed tomorrow. “
“We are being held by a madman in Moscow named Putin and a madman in Saudi Arabia named Mohammed bin Salman. So we are at the mercy of these two absolute lunatics. “
