Ukraine, Not Russia, Should Host Euro 2028 – POLITICO

LONDON – Boris Johnson backed Ukraine to host Euro 2028, despite a joint bid by Britain and Ireland to host the tournament.

Before meeting with NATO leaders for an emergency discussion on the war in Ukraine on Thursday, Britain’s Prime Minister gave an interview to Sky News asking if Ukraine should host Euro 2028.

Russia is also interested in hosting the tournament, although it is currently prevented from hosting many international sporting and cultural events.

Johnson said: “Look, I think the idea of Russia hosting any football tournament or any cultural event is beyond satire. I can’t imagine anyone would seriously consider her suggestion.

“Of course, I think it would be best if the entire Russian forces pulled out of Ukraine immediately and handed the tournament over to them.”

The English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Ireland and Republican football associations submitted a joint bid to UEFA earlier this week. The Turkish FA has also expressed interest in hosting Euro 2028. Ukraine, Not Russia, Should Host Euro 2028 - POLITICO
