Ukrainian army successfully destroys 7 out of 8 rockets fired by Russia towards Oblast

Ukraine’s air defenses successfully shot down seven out of eight missiles fired by the Russian military Tuesday night, authorities said.

Yurii Ihnat, a spokesman for the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said the Russian army fired the missiles from the Caspian Sea around 5 p.m. local time on Tuesday. The rockets were reportedly fired toward the central, southern, and western oblasts.

“On August 2 at around 17:00, the occupiers launched a missile attack from the Caspian Sea using Tu-95 (Tu-160) strategic bombers,” Ihnat said in a video posted to the Air Force Command’s Facebook page. “A total of eight X-101 (X-555) cruise missiles were fired towards the central, southern and western regions of Ukraine.”

According to the Post, the Ukrainian army destroyed seven of the eight missiles, six of which were hit by anti-aircraft missiles and another shot down by a fighter pilot. However, one of the missiles hit Lviv Oblast.

The rocket hit a military unit and caused two explosions in Chervonohrad district. At the time of writing, it was still unclear how many people died in the missile attack. It is also unclear how many buildings were destroyed, according to a Telegram post by Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration.

The missile strikes come six months after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the invasion of Ukraine in February, a move he described as a “military special operation”. Since then, a total of 5,327 Ukrainian civilians have been killed, including 3,148 in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The war has also injured a total of 7,257 civilians, according to estimates by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

As of Tuesday, the Russian military took over several regions in Ukraine, including Kherson, Zaporizhia and Luhansk. The Russian military is now focusing its efforts on occupying Donetsk, which together with Luhansk makes up the entire Donbass region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday called on Donetsk’s remaining residents to evacuate as the country’s armed forces work to defend the region from the Russians.
