Ukrainian children were seen playing in the spring sunshine in Kiev’s parks as the people’s resistance to the Russian invasion was clear to see.

Kyiv was badly hit by Russian shells in the initial stages of the invasion, with pictures showing people huddled in subway systems as millions fled the country.

But the Ukrainians’ fierce defense of the capital prevented a quick victory for Vladimir Putin’s forces as they attempted to encircle Kyiv.

And in early April, Russian troops began withdrawing from the northern areas of Ukraine in what appears to be a regrouping before attacking the east of the country again.

After the intensity of the bombing of Kyiv subsided, people went outside again to enjoy the spring weather.

Just a few weeks ago, parents could be seen in parks and playgrounds with children in completely different scenes.

At the same time, foreign leaders were also in Kyiv to express their support for the country and the relatively low shell threat.

Ukrainian authorities on Tuesday dismantled a huge Soviet-era monument in central Kyiv meant to symbolize friendship between Russia and Ukraine, in response to the invasion of Moscow, according to the city’s mayor.

The eight meter high bronze statue represented a Ukrainian and Russian worker on a pedestal, holding aloft a Soviet medal of friendship. The statue was beneath a giant titanium “People’s Friendship Arch” erected in 1982 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Soviet Union.

“We now see what that ‘friendship’ is – the destruction of Ukrainian cities… the killing of tens of thousands of peaceful people. I am convinced that such a monument now has a completely different meaning,” said Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko.

Workers first removed one of the two bronze heads, which fell to the ground with a hollow clink.

As a crane lifted the monument from its moorings and gradually lowered it to the ground, a crowd of around 100 people cheered and shouted “Honour to Ukraine” and other slogans.

“Russia invaded Ukraine… Can we be friends with Russia? What do you think? This is our worst enemy, so the monument to Russian-Ukrainian friendship no longer makes sense,” said Serhiy Myrhorodsky, one of the designers .

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, has left thousands dead or injured, reduced cities to rubble and forced more than 5 million people to flee abroad.

Moscow is calling its actions a “special operation” to disarm Ukraine and protect it from fascists.

“We shouldn’t have any relationship with the nation of aggressors…no friendship, no relationships, nothing,” said Diana, a young woman who did not give her full name.

Klitschko said the arch will remain in place but will be renamed “Arch of the Freedom of the Ukrainian People.”
