Ukrainian envoy to Olaf Scholz: Grow up! – POLITICS

BERLIN – Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, on Tuesday attacked Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his criticism of Ukraine.

“This is about the most brutal war of annihilation since the Nazis invaded Ukraine, it’s not a kindergarten,” said Melnyk, according to the German Press Agency DPA, in response to Scholz’s statements in an interview on Monday evening.

In the interview, Scholz said Ukraine’s decision last month not to welcome German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was “hindering” his trip to Kyiv.

That is not acceptable behavior with the president “of a country that provides so much military aid, so much financial aid that is necessary when it comes to the security guarantees that will be important for Ukraine in the future,” said Scholz.

But Melnyk rejected Scholz’s argument. “It doesn’t sound very statesmanlike to behave like an offended liverwurst,” he replied, using a German slang term – insulted liverwurst – for someone who is easily offended or cannot understand a joke.

Melnyk, who became Kiev’s ambassador to Germany in 2015, has been one of the federal government’s harshest critics since Russia invaded Ukraine in February.

The ambassador is a polarizing figure: for some Germans, he is one Welcome Dorn in the flesh of a government they perceive as indolent; while others have criticized his frequent attacks on Berlin as undiplomatic and unhelpful. Ukrainian envoy to Olaf Scholz: Grow up! - POLITICS
