A 65-year-old man accused of assaulting a woman and not letting her out of a room until she “started screaming” at a college that houses Ukrainian asylum-seekers has been released on bail.
Lexander Ivanec, a Russian-speaking Ukrainian national who lives at Ballyhaise Agricultural College, Co.Cavan, appeared before Judge Dermot Dempsey at Dublin District Court on Saturday.
Garda Shauna Ward told the court that the defendant had not responded to a Sept. 9 allegation of assault against the woman at the college.
He listened to the hearing through an interpreter.
The court heard that he allegedly “forced a door closed” on the applicant and kept the woman in a room for three minutes.
The Garda said the woman started screaming and the accused “ran out of the house”.
It was claimed he grabbed her on Friday and she was scared. She then raised allegations against Gardaí about the alleged incident in September.
Mr Ivanec was arrested under the Non-Fatal Offenses Act for false imprisonment but charged with assault.
Gda Ward told the court they were Ukrainian refugees living in a college house.
The investigating officer agreed with defense attorney Kevin McCrave that the bail conditions were acceptable.
Judge Dempsey ordered him to reside at the college but to have no contact with the woman who also lived there and not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs.
He also has to stay away from parts of the campus.
Mr. Ivanec has not yet hinted at a plea.
Judge Dempsey has remanded him on bail of €300 to appear in Cavan District Court on Thursday. He also provided legal aid to use a translator for legal advice.
