Video has surfaced showing Ukrainian troops cheering and celebrating after downing their first Russian drone with a Belfast-made missile.

Footage shows a soldier firing the high-speed Starstreak missile – which can fly at speeds of up to Mach 4 – at the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine.

The shooting down of the drone was greeted with triumphant cheers from the Ukrainian troops present. Yuriy Kochevenko, the Ukrainian soldier who shared the video online, thanked Britain for supplying the missile system, which was being built by Thales at their east Belfast plant, adding that his comrades are “using allied support effectively”. .

At one point, a soldier could be seen pointing his middle finger at the wreckage of the Russian drone as it fell from the sky.

The drone was shot down by members of the 95th Air Raid Brigade on April 9, Ukrainian Armed Forces chiefs said.

“Successful combat use of the Starstreak man-portable air defense system (MANPADS) in the Ukrainian-Russian war,” added Kochevenko.

“Air defense destroyed the Russian UAV Orlan. This is how Ukrainian paratroopers greet Boris Johnson.

“Thank you Britain. We use allies’ support effectively, send more of it. For our freedom and yours!”

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which later shared the video on its official Facebook page, added: “In the Kharkiv region, an air defense unit of a separate air assault brigade using British-made MANPADS “Starstreak” successfully destroyed another Russian UAV “Orlan-10 “, according to the PR service of the Command of the Airborne Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”

It is claimed that this is the first time this type of Russian drone was shot down by Ukrainian forces, the second was shot down a day later.

It added: “The video shows the first combat use of the Starstreak MANPADS in combat conditions by a unit of Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”

It comes just three days after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced Britain would provide another package of military aid to Ukraine.

Mr Johnson said: “Together with our allies, this military support will bolster Ukraine’s efforts to ensure Russia’s barbaric invasion fails.”
