United Airlines expands international flight schedule and plans more trips in 2023

United Airlines (UAL) is trying to shake off the chaos of international travel this year and has its sights set on the summer of 2023 by announcing on Wednesday the expansion of its transatlantic travel schedule for next year.

The Chicago-based airline said it will serve 37 cities in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and India, and will serve multiple destinations including Newark and Stockholm.

The airline will offer 10% more transatlantic flights next year than this year and 30% more than 2019.

Despite rising demand and increased revenue from fare increases, airlines like United have had a bumpy summer. Supply chain problems and staff shortages prompted many airlines to cancel flights or reduce capacity.

“Airlines are being forced to reduce flying due to passenger caps,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances. “And so I would really speculate – I’m hoping it doesn’t last beyond the fall and into the winter season. I hope it will be resolved by next spring or next summer, but I don’t know.”

Global uncertainty, along with inflation, will continue to cast a shadow over travel in 2023. London Heathrow, Europe’s busiest airport, said in a recent industry assessment that the “demand outlook remains uncertain”.

The expanded flight schedule United is offering in 2023 is huge, with routes between San Fransico and Rome to Shannon, Ireland, from Chicago O’Hare International Airport. An overall increase in daily flights is expected, culminating in 23 daily flights to London Heathrow next summer.

Delta Airlines (DAL), one of United’s main competitors, is also set to expand its service to Europe over the next year and plans to increase transatlantic traffic by 8% starting in 2022.
