Universal Music has extended its long-term deal with The Weeknd, under which the company will manage its entire music catalog, merchandising and audiovisual projects.
he R&B superstar, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, has produced chart-topping albums including 2020’s After Hours.
His breakout single Blinding Lights holds the record for the longest-charting song in Billboard history.
Universal Music Group (UMG), home of Republic Records, has been a partner with The Weeknd since 2012 and will remain his label partner going forward, managing all of his future work and songwriting catalog after his existing deal expires.
Bravado, UMG’s brand management and merchandising company, will continue to work closely with The Weeknd to expand and develop global merchandising, branding, e-commerce and retail licensing opportunities for future projects and releases.
Likewise, the new agreement includes future audiovisual projects in collaboration with Republic Records and UMG.
At the announcement, Sir Lucian Grainge – chairman of the UMG – said he was “delighted” to extend their “special relationship”.
He said: “Over the past decade it has been our honor to work so closely with Abel, who has quickly become one of music’s most creative and important artists, a talent that is only found once in a generation.
“We developed a deep trust and respect that enabled us to successfully execute Abel’s brilliant vision.”

Monte Lipman, chairman of Republic Records, added it was an “honour” to be involved in the “development of The Weeknd.”
He said: “Abel is the accomplished 21st century artist and global superstar who continues to break down creative barriers with his cross-genre repertoire.
“His success and career-defining achievements left a historic mark around the world.”
