Universal is filing a spate of trademark filings for Bored Ape NFT pointing to crypto and merch plans

Last month, Universal Music Group’s Web3 label 10:22PM bought a Bored Ape NFT for over $350,000.

UMG said at the time that the plan for the digital character, dubbed “Manager Noët All,” was to serve as the manager for the 10:22 p.m. virtual NFT band KINGSHIP, which UMG launched in November and is also invented from bored monkeys.

Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs are very popular. Yuga Labs, the Web3 platform behind the series, closed a $450 million series seed funding round last month at a $4 billion valuation.

UMG didn’t give many details about what it planned to do with “Manager Noët All” aside from being the manager of KINGSHIP, but when KINGSHIP launched at 10:22 PM, the label said it was planning to develop new music and to publish NFTs, community-based products, activations, and experiences in the Metaverse.

Now, after buying Bored Ape last month, Universal has filed multiple trademark applications for the NFT “Manager Noët All” (first reported by Coindesk).

Universal’s filings, filed in late March, were filed under a variety of trademark classes and hint at possible plans to double its operations in the Web3 space.

Filed trademark applications include Class 009, which covers computers and scientific equipment.

According to UMG’s filing, in the case of Bored Ape NFT, the trademark would apply to everything from “downloadable and pre-recorded computer programs for video and computer games; interactive video game programs and audio and visual recordings featuring live-action entertainment’ to ‘animated characters; downloadable virtual goods; Downloadable virtual goods linked to non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the blockchain.”

UMG has also filed a US trademark application for the NFT under International Class 042 relating to Science and Technology Services.

This filing indicates that proposed goods or services associated with the trademark will include: “Providing temporary use of non-downloadable software that enables users to view, analyze, record, store, to monitor, manage, trade and exchange currency, cryptocurrency, digital and blockchain assets, digitized assets, digital tokens, crypto token, utility tokenapplication token and non-fungible tokens (NFTs)” (MBWs in bold).

Other services listed in the filing include “computer services, namely, creating an online virtual environment for selling and buying digital currency, virtual currency.”

Additional applications have been filed under Mark Class 28, covering games and sporting goods, and Mark Class 21 for household items, both of which indicate possible real-world merchandise plans for the avatar.

The former lists goods such as “board games; card games; card game playing equipment sold as a unit; electronic game equipment with clock function; handheld device for playing electronic games”.

The latter lists items such as “champagne bucket; cocktail shaker; shot glasses” and “cups; beverage goods; glassware for beverages; bakeware and dinnerware.”

Elsewhere on Web3, in December UMG formed a wide-ranging global partnership with “avatar technology company” Genies to develop avatars and digital wearables for UMG’s artist roster.

In February, UMG announced a “strategic collaboration” with digital collector company Curio, which UMG describes as “the leading Non-Fungible Token (NFT) platform for entertainment brands and music artists.”

Also in February, UMG was hired as Chief Product Officer, Global E-Commerce to drive the Web 3.0 business.
