A fisherman nearly choked to death after a fish jumped out of the water and dived straight into his throat.

The spiny freshwater anabas fish got stuck between the unfortunate angler’s throat and nasal cavity as he tried to escape through his nose.

However, due to its spikes, it caused extensive damage to its interior and when it was finally removed, it was soaked in the man’s blood.

Doctors at Thailand’s Phatthalung Provincial Hospital were stunned when the fisherman told them on May 22 that a fish had jumped into his mouth.

The team did an X-ray and found the five-inch-long, spiny fish inside him.

The paramedic team, two doctors assisted by three nurses, successfully removed the 5-inch long fish during an hour-long operation.

Hospital official Sermsri Pathompanichrat said: “Our doctors have been working hard to minimize the damage to our patients’ organs. You successfully rescued the patient.”

The fish was eventually pulled out of the fisherman’s mouth as he tried to wriggle through his throat and out of his nose.

When it was removed, it was covered in the man’s blood where it had cut and sliced ​​open his insides.

The unidentified patient told doctors he had been fishing underwater with a harpoon shortly before the bizarre incident.

It was stuck there, trying to escape as onlookers saw him appear to gasp as he clutched his throat.

The fisherman has been treated and is now in stable condition, recovering from his surgical wounds in hospital.

Hospital official Sermsri Pathompanichrat added: “The likelihood of this happening is very small. I’ve never seen a case like this.”
