Unrestricted freedom of expression is important – but when it comes to fighting for it, we all seem to be talking

Salman Rushdie “has long defended freedom of artistic expression against all comers; now … he is a martyr for it,” Margaret Atwood wrote in The Guardian last week.

Freedom of expression, once a yawning liberal platitude, has now become a thorny issue… So to those who say “yes, but…” about Rushdie… All I can say is that there are no perfect victims, no perfect artists and not perfect art.”
