Unseen Galley Leaves from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone are up for auction
The only known surviving set of galley leaves for JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is expected to sell at auction for up to £30,000.
The never-before-seen uncorrected folios are a version of the book mailed before final proofreading, consisting of 224 numbered pages on 109 folios.
The copy was sent to Fiona Waters, the children’s book critic, in February 1997 by Rosamund Walker, Marketing Director of Bloomsbury Children’s Books.
In an accompanying note, Walker wrote: “Dear Fiona, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by Joanne Rowling.
“I have attached a manuscript for your interest as promised…I would greatly appreciate it if you would let me know your comments for offers ahead of publication.”
A month later, Waters replied, “I just loved this book. Something about Harry Potter reminds me of Charlie Bucket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
Waters’ quote was used as a review on the back cover of the book’s first printed edition.
Clive Moss, Director of Books, Manuscripts and Works on Paper at Chiswick Auctions, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer such a fascinating insight into a work that would become iconic in literary history.

“This copy is not mentioned in Philip W. Errington’s definitive bibliography, which records the entire activity of the works of JK Rowling.
“Therefore, these are the only known surviving sets of galley sheets that have been seen or offered for sale on the open market.”
The April 28 Fine Books and Works on Paper auction will also feature a set of first editions of all seven UK Harry Potter books, signed by Rowling’s assistant Fiddy Henderson – and estimated to sell for up to £28,000.
Similarly, a full set of Ian Fleming’s first edition James Bond novels is expected to fetch up to £60,000 at auction.
Moss added: “This sale is a fantastic opportunity to acquire some of the most celebrated works in first edition.
“These rare works celebrate literature and demonstrate the current strength of the market for first editions and literary works in good condition with excellent provenance.”
