Until Dawn devs are creating a PSVR2 horror that will punish you for blinking

It’s like Before Your Eyes, but even scarier.

Until Dawn and Dark Pictures Anthology developer Supermassive Games has revealed a rather interesting aspect of their upcoming PSVR2 title, The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR. To borrow the tropes of horror movies with mannequins, they move even for a second when they blink. This was of course first popularized by the Weeping Angels in Doctor Who.

The news came in the latest issue of EDGE Magazine, via MP1stdetailing the mechanics, see below.

A door painted with the instruction “don’t blink” opens into a room filled with blood-smeared mannequins in harlequin masks, their bodies twisted into unnatural poses. At some point we can no longer help ourselves and let our eyelids flutter shut. When they reopen, the mannequins are rearranged – or have rearranged themselves. Another blink and it happens again, except now one of them has come to life. As we repeat this process, we’ll learn to use our eyes tactically and only blink when our weapons are ready.

While this sounds pretty scary, Switchback VR will follow in the footsteps of Supermassive Games’ previous PSVR title, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, and be an on-rail shooter. So while you may have to put up with not blinking around mannequins, you at least don’t have to run away from them either.

The ability to recognize when you’re blinking is undoubtedly thanks to Tobii, the company Sony worked with for the PSVR2’s eye-tracking software.

The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR will be released on February 22nd as a launch title for the PSVR2 headset.
