The so-called ‘sleepy chicken’ trend sees users making their own chicken dishes, braised to treat colds and flu.

Users refer to the recipe as ‘Nyquil chicken’ or ‘sleepy chicken’, and the UK equivalent of Nyquil would be a product like Night Nurse.

Doctors have warned that you shouldn’t braise chicken – or anything for that matter in a cold and flu product.

Several videos on TikTok show people making ‘dishes’, with some using almost half a potion for their meat.

While most people usually take medications or foods with supplements, this trend shows that foods are soaked in solution.

Dr. Aaron Hartman, MD, clinical assistant professor of family medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University, explains why this trend is dangerous.

“When you cook cough drops like NyQuil, you boil water and alcohol in it, letting the chicken soak up a super concentrated amount of medicine in the meat.

“If you eat one of those cutlets fully cooked, it’s as if you’re actually consuming a quarter to a half bottle of NyQuil,” he says. MIC.com.

Several online videos show people boiling raw chicken in the potion just five minutes before serving it ‘ready to eat’.

This can actually lead to food poisoning, which leads to illness and diarrhea, Dr. Hartman explains.

He also explains that another big risk when cooking your chicken in medicine is that you inhale the medicine as well as eat it.

“Through inhalation, these drugs also enter your bloodstream really quickly and don’t go through your liver to detoxify. The effects can be quite bad depending on how much you inhale,” he added.

READ FACTS

Medicines like NyQuil contain a range of ingredients that are combined to help you sleep well while alleviating cold symptoms.

Medicines that contain acetaminophen as well as antihistamines and decongestants.

It also contains dextromethorphan, which is a cough suppressant that can affect parts of the brain, thereby helping to reduce the urge to cough.

Dextromethorphan has previously been used, not as directed by stimulant users.

It can have both physical and psychological effects and in severe cases can lead to liver failure.

When you buy an over-the-counter medicine, you should always read the leaflet that comes with it, and if you have any concerns or questions about the medicine you should ask your pharmacist or healthcare professional.

How to really treat a cold?

While there is no cure for the common cold, there are some treatments that can help.

Symptoms come on gradually and may include a stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, cough, and sneezing.

You may also experience increased temperature and pressure in your ears and face, as well as loss of taste and smell.

First of all, doctors recommend resting, sleeping, and staying warm while drinking plenty of water.

Gargling with salt water can help relieve a sore throat.

At a chemist or supermarket, you can buy decongestant sprays or tablets.

Pain relievers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen help reduce fever and aches.
