A NEW Pokémon game circulating the internet is luring fans with promises of winning non-fungible tokens (NFTs) — but beware.

Players have been warned not to play as it may contain malicious software.

Similar to Pokemon – NFTs are incredibly popular, which makes the phishing scheme all the more sinister.

The game called Pokemon Go[.]io, must be downloaded to “play”.

However, once potential players click the “Play on PC” button, software disguised as a game is downloaded.

According to reports, hackers can take control of the victim’s device through this software.

The scammers can then steal data or install malware on the unsuspecting gamer’s computer.

The phishing campaign is said to have been running since December.

Several versions of the site have since been blocked by Google.

However, it is common for such sites to reappear under similar names.

NFTs and cryptocurrencies have become increasingly popular in recent years.

Action Fraud shared some tips to avoid falling for a fraudulent scheme.

“A real bank or financial organization is not going to force you to part with your money right away,” Action Fraud said.
