Earlier, a Westminster special committee conducted an inquiry into possible misuse of the technology.

As tech experts warn that Amazon devices are “always listening,” they are calling for better education about them and careful use of them.

Tory MP and Committee Chair Julian Knight said: “The innocent little box, sitting unobtrusively in the corner of the room, seems to offer the ultimate in convenience.

“However, there is always a risk that there is a darker side to the potential for users to sacrifice their privacy, be at risk of cybercrime or expose harmful content online.”

Alexa has an “always on” microphone that can be muted – but that means it can’t hear the trigger words it needs to respond.

Cybersecurity expert Professor George Loukas told the Committee on Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS): “Technically assisted abuse at home is rampant these days.

“One look at the history of audio commands on an Amazon Echo is enough to see what was discussed and requested.

“At the very least, users should expect to turn off the smart speaker when they don’t need it.”

It comes after a Scottish sex offender admitted he used an Amazon Alexa to spy on his victim.

Aaron Herschell25, is the first person to be convicted in the UK for wiretapping conversations on the device.

Herschell – who was previously jailed for attempted rape in 2017 – told the Livingston Sheriff Court last week he connected his device to hers “without her knowledge”.

E-commerce company Amazon said: “Privacy and security are built into every device, feature and experience.

“Unfortunately, there are rare instances where some people go to devastating lengths to abuse technology.”
