US CDC Ends Country-Specific Covid Travel Health Advice

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Monday it has ended its health advice for Covid-19 country trips, as fewer countries have reported enough data for accurate assessments.

In April, the CDC dropped its Covid-19 “do not travel” recommendations for about 90 international destinations and said they would retain their Level 4 travel health advice “for special circumstances.”

Stage 4 urges all Americans avoiding travel because of Covid-19, including those who are fully vaccinated.

Since April, Ireland has been listed at Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions, although its travel advisory also adds: “The CDC has determined that Ireland has high levels of Covid-19.”

“With fewer countries testing or reporting Covid-19 cases, the CDC’s ability to accurately estimate Covid-19 levels (travel health advice) for most destinations American travelers visit is limited,” it said Monday.

As recently as March, the CDC recommended travel to about 120 countries and territories worldwide, including Ireland — or more than half of all travel destinations.

The news had deterred some Americans from traveling and occasionally caused consternation in some countries. For example, a recommendation not to travel to Japan in May 2021 – months before the Olympics – attracted a lot of attention.

The notices have received little attention since April because the CDC has not issued blanket recommendations against travel to specific countries.

In April, the CDC also removed cruises from its list of Covid-19 travel health advisories.

In June, the Biden administration scrapped its pre-departure Covid-19 testing requirements for international air travel, although most travelers still need to be vaccinated to visit the United States.

CDC said Monday it will only issue a travel health notice “for a country if a situation, such as B. a relevant Covid-19 variant, changing the CDC travel advice for that country.”
