US President Joe Biden declares the Covid pandemic ‘over’

President Joe Biden declared the Covid-19 pandemic “over” and criticized his predecessor’s handling of top-secret documents in a wide-ranging interview with CBS News’ 60 Minutes program that aired Sunday.

In a segment of the taped interview, filmed during his visit to the Detroit, Michigan auto show last week, Mr. Biden was asked by interviewer Scott Pelley if the return of the annual event signified the pandemic it has been experiencing for the past three years had closed had ended.

The President replied: “The pandemic is over”.

He acknowledged Covid is still “an issue” and said his administration is still “working a lot on it”, but he said everyone at the show “seems to be in good shape”, citing the crowd as an example for how things are changing to a post-pandemic world.

Mr. Biden also hit out at his predecessor, Donald Trump, for hoarding more than 100 top-secret documents at his beach club in Palm Beach, Florida.

Asked about his reaction to an FBI photographic evidence showing several classified documents strewn on the floor of Mr Trump’s office at his Mar-a-Lago club, Mr Biden said he thought to himself, “How could that only happen – like … anyone can be so irresponsible”.

“And I thought: What data was in there that could compromise sources and methods? By that I mean names of people who helped… and so on. And it’s just — totally irresponsible,” he said.

However, Mr. Biden stressed that he would not be involved in any decision to prosecute Mr. Trump for hoarding the documents, which by law are the property of the federal government.

He also said he didn’t know what was in the documents because he didn’t want to “get” it [himself] amidst the question of whether or not the Justice Department should take certain actions it might take. US President Joe Biden declares the Covid pandemic ‘over’
