The US government is reportedly ready to transfer Soviet tanks to help Ukraine’s defense efforts against continued Russian attacks in the east of the country.
This was announced by a government official in Washington New York Times on Friday that US President Joe Biden’s administration’s decision came in response to requests from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to support his country’s war effort with military equipment, including tanks.
Following Zelenskyy’s appeals last week, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had said it was “very difficult” to supply Ukraine with tanks and jets, adding that NATO and G7 countries were “agonized” because they couldn’t be more resolute in helping Ukraine.
But according to the Times report, while the official on Friday declined to say how many tanks would be sent or from which countries they would come, the tanks would allow Ukraine to conduct long-range artillery strikes on Russian targets in the Donbass, the contains the separatist provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk. The Kremlin has recognized the independence of the two provinces using their defense as a pretext for the February invasion of Ukraine.
Earlier this week, Russia hinted that the war would refocus on these eastern areas after weeks of attacks on cities across Ukraine.
The announcement was widely seen in the West as an admission by the Kremlin that Ukrainian resistance to Russian aggression was unexpectedly fierce, forcing a change of strategy.
Also this week, British and US intelligence agencies shared their assessments that Putin is being lied to by his own advisers about the Russian military’s performance in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, on a trip to Poland last week, Biden reiterated the US commitment to supporting Ukraine during a speech in which he said Russian President Vladimir Putin “cannot stay in power,” the White House later noted .
