The apology from Mr Beattie came on Monday afternoon after the messages came to light

They came to light after he shared a joke over the weekend involving the wife of former DUP leader Edwin Poots and a brothel.

Mr Beattie – leader elected last year – later deleted the tweet and apologized.

But since then other messages have appeared that prompt him to apologize again.

He said Monday that he was made aware of “completely unacceptable” tweets dating back to 2011.

Seen tweets Mr. Beattie, 56 years old, was again accused of misconduct.

One, posted alongside an article or Viagra, said: “Are you guys just unattractive women or men we need a helping hand?”

In another, the former soldier posted an image of a woman with two Christmas pudding designs on her sweater saying: “Don’t wear a jumpsuit like this then complain when I stare stare at your breasts.”

And in one he wrote, after mentioning seeing a woman ironing at his front door: “She’d better go back to the sweatshop and do it right.”

Earlier, DUP Stormont Secretary Edwin Poots said his wife was “disgusted” after the head of UUP tweeted about a brothel.

On Monday, the Upper Bann MLA reiterated an apology to Mr Poots and his wife Glynis on the floor of the Council on Monday, emphasizing that he was “really sorry”.

Hours later, when many false tweets appeared on Belfast Live, he said: “Ever since I issued my unrecorded apology regarding a tweet over the weekend, I’ve been made aware of some historic tweets I’ve published.

“I am deeply ashamed and embarrassed by the content of these tweets. They are completely unacceptable. They do not reflect the views or values that I hold today.

‘I WAS SHORT’

“Since entering politics, I have worked hard to increase women’s representation and advocate for policies that improve the lives and well-being of all women and girls.

“That is my position and I deeply regret that these historic tweets can undermine that position.

“Misogyny is something that needs to be taken very seriously and dealt with through education, listening and understanding. I’m sorry I’ve been on the lows lately, but first and foremost I’ll continue to listen to voices. of women and girls.

“My actions in the future will be consistent with the values I hold.”

Mr Beattie, elected MLA in 2016, claimed the Mr and Mrs Poots joke was not his own and that he was sharing something that was sent to him.

Mr Poots said he accepted Mr Beattie’s apology, but questioned his “incompetent” statement in posting it in the first place.

“I just don’t know what he’s thinking about,” he told BBC Radio Ulster.

‘DISCLOSURE’

“I’m a big boy, I can abuse a lot in politics and that’s okay, but we really shouldn’t involve other members of one’s family in anything, they have right to my private life and unfortunately that was violated as far as my family is concerned in this case.”

Mr. Poots said his wife, a nurse, was “disgusted” with the tweet.

“But it actually had a bigger impact on the rest of us, her children and myself,” he said.

“Saturday night was the first time our family got together as a family in four years, because we have two children who are doing volunteer work abroad, and we happened to be in the same house again. .

“We got the news late on Saturday night and it’s not something people can really accept being described as a prostitute, or your mother being described as a prostitute. .

“It’s heartbreaking, my wife is a working-class girl, not a working girl.”

‘EXCELLENTLY HOT’

He added: “For her to be demeaned like that is something that I personally find extremely heartbreaking.”

Mr. Beattie, who has served 28 years in the military, released a statement when he started the Assembly business on Monday.

“We all have to be mindful of our language, and as I’ve said it many times on the floor of this room, we must be on the lookout for hurtful and harmful language,” he said.

“Over the weekend, I let my guard down and I’m really sorry for that.

“I posted a joke and whatever my intentions were, it was just inappropriate.

“That is completely wrong and fundamentally wrong and so it is important that I stand here and say to Mr and Mrs Poots that I am sorry for the hurt I may have caused.

“But I have to tell the whole society that my language is wrong on every level and I have to apologize to all of them.”

Later, during questioning before Congress, First Deputy Minister Michelle O’Neill said that online loss was a “big problem”.

‘MISOGYNY ONLINE IS A BIG PROBLEM’

“For those in the political leadership who engage in sexism on a daily basis and think it’s a joke, that in itself is disgusting,” she said.

“It’s not political leadership. Political leadership is calling things out whenever it’s wrong and in this case, the confusion online is a huge problem.

“In the period that we have just passed after the death of Ashling Murphy and an outpouring of grief, but even more so than anger because of the fact that this (misogyny) persists in such a systematic way, for a political leader engaged online what he thinks is a joke, I don’t think I think it’s just a joke. “
