Stars of upcoming fantasy drama Vampire Academy paid their respects to genre titan Twilight but said their new series would be unique and “challenging” for viewers.
Ieron Moore and Sisi Stringer both admitted they’re big fans of the famous saga, but said their new world of bloodsuckers is “unapologetically themselves.”
The series, which premieres September 15 on US streaming service Peacock, follows the story of supernatural friends Rose and Lissa.
Rose is Lissa’s guardian, a vampire-human hybrid known as Dhampir who is tasked with protecting her friend, who is a royal Moroi vampire.

Vampire Academy is based on a young adult paranormal romance series by international bestselling author Richelle Mead.
Stringer, who plays Rose in the Peacock series, said she first came across the books in the “Twilight era” and fell in love with the story.
“You gotta give respect where it’s due, Twilight is the OG (original gangster), I love Twilight,” she said.
“But Richelle creates a world in the books that we’ve never seen before for vampires.
“There are different types of vampires and there is this ancient society and it has its own rules and hierarchies and systems and laws.

“We exist outside of the human world in our own closed domain, we don’t really interact with the human world at all.
“You’re transported into this world that’s just vampires and their laws and all the things they do, so I think it’s very different in that regard.”
Moore said the series was undoubtedly influenced by previous vampire shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Vampire Diaries, but the cast had had “freedom” to make it their own and that “all the elements were there.”

“They were all their own show, they were all so different from each other. They really had their own thing and they ran with it,” he said.
“This is what makes our world so perfect, this is our world, come and see it without apologies.
“The books are so well constructed that it gives us almost absolute freedom to bring all the best bits from shows that people have loved in the past with vampires.
“We’ve got the sex appeal, we’ve got the action, all the elements are there.”
He continued, “People are going to see a lot of company on our show, there’s a fantastic element, but people are going to see it and be like, ‘oh, that’s quite a challenge, that’s got me asking questions’.
“This aspect of the mirror of society will make people invest. It’s a vampire story, but vampires are just a metaphor.”
