Vampire Survivors proves that simple games can be amazing

WHILE I’m recovering from a long day at work, I turn on the game I’ve played many times to relax, Vampire Survivors.

Available on Xbox Game Pass, I gave it a try, although I didn’t think the base of the game was really my cup of tea.

I didn’t get it at first. You walk around picking up items and that’s it.

The cannons fire on their own, hordes of enemies come relentlessly, and not much feels under your control.

Then a swarm of bats came across the screen and burst into a puddle of experience as they made contact with my garlic shield, and that’s when I got it.

It is one of the most popular games in the genre known as auto survivors.

The ten games of 2022 you must play on Xbox Game Pass

You choose a character, a stage, change weapons and items, and that’s almost all of your input.

The game limits the number of weapons and abilities you can collect, and finding the right combination is crucial to defeating your enemies.

It’s this level of strategy that makes the game so satisfying, and a run of bad drops will encourage you to try your luck again.

There is no real ending. The enemies never stop spawning, more are appearing every second, and they will never stop coming.

You will never be able to survive forever. Once you have maxed out weapons and abilities, subsequent tiers only grant you more money or health.

The enemies don’t have that kind of cap and they only get stronger as the game progresses.

While trying to create a strong build as quickly as possible to outrun the enemy, in terms of actual gameplay, you’re often encouraged to not move at all.

Upgrades can give your weapons longer range or more damage. If you combine this with other abilities, enemies will be knocked out as soon as they get close to you.

This means the best strategy may be to stay put and only move when necessary to gain experience or health.

The arcade style of gameplay, along with the randomness of enemies and weapon drops, will convince you that your minute run could be a 30 minute epic next time.

You soon realize that the only real progress you’ve made is the time you’ve put into it.

The more you play, the more achievements, weapons, items, characters, and stages you can unlock, but even if you fail, you always unlock more.

Playing Vampire Survivors will advance you in Vampire Survivors. It’s a game you’re guaranteed to win.

Aside from the endless unlocks, you’ll learn enemy patterns, get better luck, or purchase any necessary upgrades.

It gives you the feeling of accomplishment, even if that accomplishment is inevitable. Most games are like that, but Vampire Survivors lays it bare.

Anyway, I’ll probably play it for another hour tonight.
