Veteran Puppetist Bill Barretta on the most difficult scenes shot with Puppet

While promoting the upcoming Disney+ series “The Muppets Mayhem” at NYCC this year, Barretta spoke to members of the press about some of the more difficult scenes he had to film for the new show, including squeezing Electric Mayhem’s entire roster into a small car with Lilly Singh or having Dr. Tooth in a hot tub. However, he goes on to explain that each shot with the Muppets has its own set of challenges, many of which he has seen performers face before:

“Whenever I’m involved in a new project, the first thing I talk about is the logistical aspect of it. It’s always a challenge no matter what you do, because we’re working on it. creating the illusion that these characters are living in the real world like we do.. Getting in the car doesn’t mean we can get in the car because there’s no room for people to lie and lie under the crate, right We had to unscrew the bottom of their car or the bottom of their tram van or bus, so we could get underneath and work through it. I was in a stunt plane. [and] Underwater. This program doesn’t have any more challenges than another. “

To help the other members of the Muppets deliver the best performances possible, Barretta also worked as the troupe’s coordinator. For this role, he made sure that the actions in the script were indeed things that were possible for puppeteers. This included being their advocate in the writers’ room by telling his co-creators Adam F. Goldberg and Jeff Yorkes what the Muppets could and couldn’t do easily.
