Vicky Phelan has revealed she won’t be able to make the trip to Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo in April for the ‘Climb with Charlie’ event, as she is “physically or mentally unfit” “.
Ormer broadcaster RTÉ Charlie Bird organized the event to raise funds for the Motor Neuropathy Association of Ireland and for mental health charity Pieta House.
Mr Bird was diagnosed with a motor disorder last year and has pledged to climb Ireland’s holiest mountain to raise awareness for terminally ill people and mental health struggles.
In December, Ms. Phelan expressed support for the event and said she would join the climb.
However, the cervical cancer campaigner said today that she is not “physically or mentally” healthy enough to participate.
In her first update since starting a new round of radiation three weeks ago, Ms Phelan said nothing could prepare her for the treatment.
The mother-of-two revealed in an Instagram post that she has been recovering from complications over the past two weeks at the Milford Care Center in Castletroy, Co Limerick.
“So today, I am going home from two weeks in this room at @milfordcarecentre recovering from complications from my radiation therapy,” she said.
“I have NEVER been sick or hurt as much as I have in the past two weeks!!! Radiation therapy increased my pain levels and also made me unable to walk leaving me unable to walk without assistance. I am only now, for the past few days able to walk without a 4-wheeler or a Zimmer frame.
“Hiking is still way ahead of me but I hope I get there again. I just finished my last round of radiation last Monday and it may take a few weeks to feel the effects, so I’m really hoping that I’ll be able to walk a little more freely over the next few weeks, but I’m also acutely aware that I may never get back what I had…
“And so I had to make the difficult decision NOT to make the trip to Croagh Patrick in April for #climbwithcharlie because I was simply not physically or mentally strong enough.
“The past few weeks have really blown me away, and I need to focus on getting back in shape. I contacted Charlie, and he was great about it. “
Ms Phelan said her condition had become “unpredictable” and she would limit her social media posts to spend time with her family.
“I will also withdraw this post on social media. I need to focus on spending time with family and friends. I hope that everyone understands. Unfortunately, my condition has become unpredictable and is increasingly affecting my daily life,” she said.
“Thank you ALL for your continued support and for all your well wishes. I really appreciate the support. “
