Video game history collides as Sierra founders bring a groundbreaking text-adventure game to VR

Ken and Roberta Williams, two of the most influential personalities in video game history, bring the original text adventure from 1976 Colossal cave adventure to virtual reality, as well as Mac and Windows PC.

It sounds pretty simple when I put it that way, doesn’t it? And then I remind you that the game in question looked like this:

And then I remind you that Roberta and Ken have been retired for 25 years.

and then I remind you – while Roberta and Ken were doing king quest and phantasmagoria AND is credited with the first graphic adventure game ever in puzzle search AND founded the legendary game company Sierra, which published everything from The incredible machine to Leisure Suit Larry to half-life – They weren’t really involved Colossal cave adventurealso known Adventurealso known Advent. It was just the game that inspired her.

So this is a remarkable turn of events, to say the least, spanning nearly 50 years of video game history Games you originally played on mainframes to Oculus Quest 2, a story in which Roberta and Ken played important roles. But why? “Ken was bored and I suggested him write a book over Sierra. The process of writing the book brought back long-forgotten memories, which led to Ken deciding to learn Unity and make a game,” Roberta Williams declares to PC gamer.

I’d say I have no idea what to expect – if their new company Cygnus Entertainment hadn’t already released a barebones graphical trailer, which you can check out here:

Cygnus currently has 12 full-time employees working on the game. “It’s not yet decided whether future games will be developed by Cygnus Entertainment LLC or if Colossal Cave 3D was a one-shot effort. We will see,” reads the website of the new company.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the groundbreaking work of Ken and Roberta Williams, one of their former collaborators, known as Metal Jesus on YouTube, sat down with them last week for an in-depth retrospective. I would highly recommend give him a watch:

And if you want to taste the original Colossal cave adventure (which can’t be technically the first text adventure game), you can Play it right here on the web.

Thanks for all the games, Roberta and Ken. I grew up with it king quest and dr brain and search for glory and many, many more, and without them I probably wouldn’t be here. Video game history collides as Sierra founders bring a groundbreaking text-adventure game to VR
