Wii Sports has a bloody legacy behind it. Bundled with the Wii console at launch, it is the best selling single platform game of all time and the fourth best selling game ever, behind only Tetris, Gran Theft Auto V and Minecraft. Wrap your head around it.
It’s really no surprise. As part of Nintendo’s second best-selling home console of all time (the Switch just surpassed it last year), the Wii has moved more than 100 million units in its lifetime. And if someone had a Wii, they probably had Wii Sports too. The universality of Wii Sports was unstoppable. The motion controls certainly had their… off moments, but Wii Sports made it a point to swing a Wii Remote around. You could play it, your parents could play it, your grandparents could probably beat you up at bowling – anyone could play it. It embodied Nintendo’s family-friendly philosophy better than almost anything before it.
We had a sequel in Wii Sports Resort, but we now have a brand new sequel on a new console in the form of Nintendo Switch Sports – and it’s coming this week! Ahead of the new game’s release, the lovely Alex, Zion and Felix sat down over coffee (we assume) to discuss what made Wii Sports so legendary and why so many people remember it so fondly. They share memories, talk about the Mii Maker and assess its impact on the gaming industry.
This collection of five sports games has changed motion control and family gaming for the better, and everyone has their favorites. You can vote in our poll below to let us know what’s yours – after watching the video of course. Then share your Wii Sports memories in the comments below and on YouTube!
