View from Moscow – Damage to reputation can be a lasting legacy

For Irish people living in Moscow, there is some disappointment that the Emerald Ball, a highlight of the expat calendar which takes place just before St Patrick’s Day, has been cancelled. But by far the greater emotion among them and the broader population of the Russian capital is shock at President Vladimir Putin’s recent actions.

So says Irishman Chris Weafer, former head of research at Irish Life, who later became chief strategist at two of Russia’s largest banks – Sberbank and Alfa Bank.
