Viewers of THE Teacher were severely distracted by the mobile phone error in the latest episode.
Drama of Channel 5 sees Sheridan Smith play Jenna, a teacher accused of sleeping with Kyle, one of her 15-year-old students, after a night of drunkenness.
Jenna has no memory of what happened, so she pleaded guilty to sleeping with a minor and lost her job and friends.
Last night’s episode saw Kyle’s mother Mary in a meeting with Nina, Jenna’s school colleague about her son.
When Mary questioned why the school had put him on referral instead of backing him up, Nina discreetly slid her cell phone across the table and asked her to read the message.
While Mary claims it’s not her son’s phone, she does read an exchange between her son and a mysterious person that suggests they’ve set up Jenna.
Nina then reveals that she saw Kyle using the phone at the time she confiscated it from him.
However, viewers immediately question how Nina not only got into the phone but why she was able to read the messages and why she didn’t turn the phone over to the police afterwards.
Taking to Twitter, one person wrote: “Is a teacher allowed to read your phone messages #TheTeacher.”
Another added: “Who shouldn’t she hand that phone over to the police first? # Teacher.”
A third person tweeted: “Surely Nina won’t be allowed to read student phone text messages? # Instructor.”
Meanwhile, a fourth person shared: “Are teachers allowed to read text messages on students’ phones.”
The Teacher ends at 9pm tonight on Channel 5.
