Villas in Turkey with Love Island-style pools and great value for money

YOU get the whole lotta villa in Turkey. More balconies than Romeo and Juliet could use.

The rooms are big enough for a party of nail games.

Enough bathrooms for a tween mother and teenage daughter and still room for dad to shave.

The Love Island-style swimming pool and giant American fridge have enough room to lay your head in to cool off after a day in the sun.

I have vacationed in the Kalkan resort, where the southwest of the country meets the Med, more times than I have eaten barbecue. First with my wife, more recently with teenagers Mia and Orla.

Every year, the conversation on the sun loungers is the same: “You make more money in a villa than in Greece, Italy, or Spain.”

That’s why we will fly on Turkish Airlines again this summer, because now Turkey is no longer stuck at a red light.

Our last visit, in 2020, was the mansion thriller that outshines them all. We stayed in Kalkan’s quieter, greener and quieter Kalamar Bay and split our fortnight between two five-bed beds booked by local company Overseas Collection.

Villa Vaha and Villa Teramare are the company’s top performers, whose properties range in high season from £525 a week for a two-bed apartment with a shared pool, to £8,500 for a super luxury conservatory where former 007 Daniel Craig had stayed while filming in Turkey.

Vaha is our all on £2,200 a week salary but half as much when parting with another family. Teramare is similar.

Each room has a terrace so you can explore the rooftops. Reboot with your G&T and drink in view of Kalamar Bay, Mouse Island and Snake Island – named for their shape, not their inhabitants.

Both villas are a 5-minute flip-flop from Kalamar Beach Club, once known for its thrilling, vibrant water sports and a large restaurant and bar overlooking the ocean.

Kalkan has no beaches, except for a beautiful pebble beach by the harbour. If sand is your thing, the spectacular Kaputas Bay is a 15-minute taxi ride away. Or half an hour away is Patara Beach, 12 miles long and backed by Roman ruins.

But what Kalkan does are extremely stylish beach clubs. From luxurious sunbathing rigs, you can plunge into the clear blue sea before bouncing around for a lazy drink at the bar or a fish party.

A daily sport is to compare cocktails, water sports and lunchtime outfits at each club.

There’s still only one nightclub in town. But Outdoor Chocolate, with its giant chandelier on the dance floor, is teen heaven. It’s also very safe, with a careful door policy and a team of honest, trustworthy taxi drivers nearby.

Parents can pick up the phone at the town’s rooftop restaurants and bars – including scores.

Kalkan’s cobbled streets are lined with whitewashed stone houses covered with bougainvillea and the top treat is a rooftop dinner with twinkling lights and views of the mosque and sea.

Some luxury restaurants are increasing their prices in London now, but there are still plenty of cheaper, traditional restaurants.

Our favorites include the oldest restaurant in town, Akin, which overlooks the harbor, and Belgin’s Kitchen, where you dine on the terrace with low tables while sitting on giant cushions Turkish style.

Bars abound too but none beats the outdoor Botanik Garden – a starry wonderland with treehouses, hammocks and a youthful cocktail crew. Don’t make this a habit, though, or you’ll miss out on some great day trips.

The to-do is a private boat tour of the local bays and islands, with snorkeling, lunch on board, cake and tea and often cave stops and mud baths. Other delights include hiking through the white woods of Saklikent Gorge, canoeing the Xanthos River, and visiting local Roman and Lycean ruins.

Our tour and boat rental agency is Adda Tours, one of the main establishments in town, with excellent guides. It also offers good value car and quad bike rentals and airport transfers.

Not that you would expect to move anywhere, anywhere, from your lavish Kalkan mansion.
