Vivacity Labs is partnering with Dorset Council in the latest sustainable transport initiative

Vivacity Labs is working with Dorset Council to create a sustainable transport network.

Transportation technology scale-up Vivacity Labs has announced its new partnership with Dorset Council as part of a major sustainable infrastructure development in the county.

Fifteen traffic sensors from Vivacity Labs will be installed across the county in Dorchester, Ferndown, Shaftesbury, Stapehill and Weymouth, collecting 24/7 detailed and anonymous data on modes of transport, traffic flow and travel patterns. The sensors collect data to enable decision makers to gain a better understanding of the current and historical use and flows of modes of transport and how they are changing over time.

This comes after Dorset Council received funding from the Department for Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund, which aims to improve productivity through investment in public and sustainable transport infrastructure in English cities.

As part of this initiative, Dorset Council is working with Vivacity Labs to understand current usage and trends from cyclists, pedestrians and road users in these areas. This baseline data – over a five-year monitoring period – will be used to measure changes in behavior and modal shift following the implementation of active travel programs, including new bike lanes, pedestrian routes and bus improvements.

Joe Allen, Principal Technician at Dorset Council, commented: “We chose Vivacity sensors for this project because we needed to solve the challenge of monitoring pedestrian and bicycle movement. Many traditional monitoring technologies could not be used in the required locations, so we looked for something innovative and forward-thinking.”

Mark Nicholson, CEO of Vivacity Labs, added: “We look forward to seeing the impact of data-driven decision-making across the region and providing Dorset Council with the insights it needs to achieve its sustainable travel network ambitions. At Vivacity we strive to make cities smarter, safer and more sustainable and we look forward to seeing how data will help Dorset Council in the long term.”
