According to a former CIA chief, Vladimir Putin’s closest allies could assassinate him with a “hammer to the head.”

Daniel Hoffman, a former senior officer who served as Moscow’s station chief, believes any attempt to overthrow the dictator will be swift and potentially deadly.

And he says the people most likely to pull off such a plot will be part of the Russian president’s inner circle and will be motivated by his botched invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking of Daily BeastMr Hoffman said: “These guys who are going to do it will keep it so secret that Putin doesn’t find them and kill them first. It will happen all of a sudden. And he will be dead.

“No one will ask, ‘Hey Vladimir, do you want to go?’ No. It’s a frigging hammer on the head and he’s dead.”

Mr. Hoffman has singled out three people he believes are most likely to orchestrate Putin’s eventual downfall; Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu, Chairman of the Security Council Nikolai Patrushev and Director of the FSB Alexander Bortnikov.

He believes they all have ambitions to succeed Putin and would keep a close eye on any possible rebellion.

The images of the ex-spy chief conjure up the assassination of Soviet revolutionary Leon Trotsky, notoriously murdered with an ice pick on the orders of Joseph Stalin.

Because of the former KGB chief’s ailing health, an assassination may not be necessary, reports say.

Speculations about Putin’s health have been piling up for months, and in April it was claimed he was in urgent need of cancer surgery.

Reports also claim that the Russian leader is suffering from Parkinson’s and “schizophrenic symptoms”.

The Kremlin has not responded to recent allegations about Putin’s poor health, but has regularly denied claims that he suffers from such problems.
