Russia has lost its 50th colonel in the war in Ukraine.
The death of artillery commander Lieutenant Colonel Vladimir Nigmatullin, father of three, from Yekaterinburg became known.
He was killed on May 31, 2022, but his loss to Russian forces was only announced today.
Russia has lost nearly a colonel every two days in the bloody conflict in Ukraine sparked by Vladimir Putin.
His family shared the news of his death on social media, where they said Nigmatullin – who they called their “little man” – was a father of three and an “example for the motherland”.
Ukraine also confirmed his death through his personal service number F-578429.
The exact circumstances of his death are not yet known.
His sister-in-law Marina Konyukhova posted on social media:
“Forever memorial, darling, dear, much-loved man, you are dead.
“We still can’t believe you’re gone.
“You are a father of three and a great husband to my sister.
“I’m always proud of you and I always will be proud.
“You set an example for the motherland so that everyone will do as you do.
“You were posthumously awarded the Order of Valor.
“You have passed through many conflict zones.”
His death comes as Russia lost its 11th general to the conflict, Major General Roman Kutuzov, who was chief of staff of the 29th Combined Arms Army in recent days.
Today it was announced that he was posthumously promoted to lieutenant general.
He died in an ambush in the Donbass.
“He calmly climbed the career ladder, successfully commanded the troops and died as a soldier fighting at the front,” reads a report by Readovka.
A picture shows Kutuzov’s funeral in Russia.
One mourner said: “I knew him personally, Roman lived a hero and died a hero.
“My condolences to his loved ones, strength and patience to his subordinates and colleagues.”
Some sources have claimed that Russia lost a second and senior general in the same incident in the Donetsk region.
There is evidence that Lieutenant General Roman Berdnikov, 47, was also killed.
Less than a month ago, Berdnikov was commander of the Russian forces’ task force in Syria, and he was moved to lead Putin’s armed forces and those of the Donetsk People’s Republic [DPR] in Donbass.
If his death is confirmed, he will be the 12th general to be killed in the war.
