According to a CIA insider, a secret plot to oust Russian President Vladimir Putin may already be underway in his inner circle.

Putin’s cronies could already be lurking in the wings if Russia’s invasion of Ukraine fails as concerns and speculation about the president’s health mount.

Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s defense minister and close Putin ally, could be at the center of a mutiny to overthrow the president, according to Daniel Hoffman, head of Moscow’s ex-CIA station.

He added that if someone wants to overthrow Putin, it will be done in secret so he doesn’t find them and kill them first.

“Nobody will ask, ‘Hey Vladimir, do you want to go?’ no It’s a frigging hammer blow to the head and he’s dead. Or it’s time to go to the sanatorium,” Hoffman said The daily beast.

“They smack him for it. They will do that.”

Hoffman said there are three key players to watch if Putin is to be replaced, with Nikolai Patrushev, the head of Putin’s Security Council, potentially topping the list.

Others include Alexander Bortnikov, the director of Russia’s secret service, the FSB, and Sergei Shoigu, who some see as the most likely replacement.

Putin’s position could be threatened if the country’s economy turns south, the country loses more soldiers, or general unrest breaks out.

However, should Putin be overthrown, Ronald Marks, another ex-CIA agent, fears a massive power struggle in Russia and chaos in Moscow.

“It wouldn’t go to hell right away. We’re not just talking about tanks on the street. What you’re probably going to see is among the guys around him, there’s going to be a struggle to take this job,” he warned the Daily Beast.

It is believed that Russia lost up to 10 generals and up to 30 senior officers in the war in Ukraine.

Latest estimates also put as many as 30,000 Russian soldiers killed in action and up to 100,000 injured as the conflict has dragged on for four months.

Russia has reportedly lost over 4,000 tanks and armored vehicles, 216 warplanes, 183 attack helicopters and 620 drones.

There has been speculation about Putin’s health in Russia, and while there is “no immediate threat” there is more “chatter” about his future, according to Western officials.

Officials believe the 2024 presidential election is “looking more interesting than six months ago,” with younger people more skeptical of the Kremlin’s rhetoric regarding Ukraine than older generations in outlying areas who generally support the regime.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s intelligence community also believes Putin may be ousted as his inner circle seeks to take control. The sun reports.

Alexander Bortnikov could be the chosen successor should Putin be ousted, especially if Ukrainians can drive Russian troops out of the Donbass region.
