Russia will only use nuclear weapons if the country’s existence is threatened, according to Vladimir Putin’s government.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov admitted this on Tuesday, citing Moscow’s security policy in the face of the disastrous invasion of Ukraine.

Putin announced in the early hours of February 24 his so-called “special operation” to “demilitarize” the neighboring ex-Soviet nation.

But despite leaked battle plans indicating he expected to take the capital Kyiv within 48 hours – almost a month later – his forces are still yet to breach his valiant defences.

The West responded to the invasion by imposing several crippling sanctions on Russia, hoping it would damage its economy so badly that it would pull out.

But the constant artillery barrages continued, killing thousands.

And with progress proving slower than expected, there are growing concerns that Putin could escalate a nuclear war not only against Ukraine, but against its Western backers as well.

State-of-the-art Western weapons and equipment, supplied by NATO member states, have proven crucial to Ukraine’s ability to repel its invaders.

Last month, former KGB agent Putin ordered Russia’s nuclear forces to be put on high alert.

And days after the attack began on Feb. 28, the Kremlin’s defense ministry said its nuclear missile forces and North Pacific fleets had been put on increased combat engagements.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned earlier this month that the likelihood of nuclear war was growing.

He said on March 14: “The prospect of nuclear conflict, once unthinkable, is now again within the realm of possibility.”

It comes as Joe Biden is scheduled this week to discuss longer-term adjustments to NATO forces and contingencies if nuclear weapons are used.

The US President’s National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, also said the President – along with his European counterparts – would announce new sanctions against Russia in the coming days.

They will also unveil new measures to tighten existing sanctions during Biden’s upcoming trip to Brussels, where NATO and the EU are based, he added.

When asked about the use of nuclear weapons, Sullivan said Putin raised the specter of using them, but the US has not changed its nuclear stance to date.

Biden has vowed not to send US troops to Ukraine but pledged to honor Washington’s commitment to defend NATO members if they were attacked.

Sullivan said the United States is monitoring the issue.

“But we’re constantly monitoring this potential contingency and, of course, taking it as seriously as it can be taken,” Sullivan said.

“We will consult with allies and partners about this potential contingency… and discuss what our possible response will be.”

Sullivan said the new sanctions would be introduced Thursday and would focus on enforcing previous sentences.

Biden will also announce “joint actions” to improve energy security in Europe, which is heavily dependent on Russian gas.

He will attend an emergency NATO summit, meet with G7 leaders and address European Union leaders at a European Council meeting, Sullivan said.

“He will have the opportunity to coordinate the next phase of military assistance to Ukraine.

“He will join our partners in imposing further sanctions on Russia and strengthening existing sanctions to tackle tax evasion and ensure robust enforcement,” Sullivan told reporters.

Biden will also announce further US contributions to improve humanitarian conditions for refugees and civilians in Ukraine, many of whom are trapped in cities under siege.

After Brussels, Biden will travel to Warsaw to show his support for an ally that shares a border with Ukraine.

During his stay in Poland, Sullivan said he will “work with US troops who are now helping to defend NATO territory” and meet with experts involved in the humanitarian response to the war.

The US President will also meet Polish President Andrzej Duda.

The Duda government has proposed that Poland replace Russia in the G20 group of major economies.

Sullivan said the US wants to consult with its allies on Russia’s G20 membership.

“We believe that things cannot go on as usual in international institutions and in the international community,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan said Biden will go to Europe “to make sure we stay united, to cement our collective resolve, to send a strong message that we’re ready and committed while it lasts.”
