A key ally of Vladimir Putin has warned that the “horsemen of the apocalypse are on their way” in a thinly veiled swipe at Western leaders.
Dmitry Medvedev warned that if Ukraine used US-supplied missiles to attack Russia, Moscow would attack cities in the west.
The 56-year-old, who served as Russia’s president from 2008 to 2012 after Putin was forced to resign due to term limits, is currently deputy chairman of Russia’s National Security Council.
Last week he made a chilling statement targeting Ukraine and its allies.
He said: “I’m often asked why my telegram posts are so harsh. The answer is I hate her. They are assholes and degenerate.
“They want death for Russia. And as long as I live, I will do everything to make them go away.”
This follows an earlier warning that Russia is ready to step up its offensive if its territory is attacked by missiles supplied to Ukraine, the reports Times.
“The horsemen of the apocalypse are already on their way,” said Medvedev.
Former opposition MP Dmitry Gudkov has indicated that Medvedev is preparing to hand over power should Putin’s term in office come to an end.
His anti-Western tirades are seen as appealing to hardliners in Russia’s military and security structures, who see him as too liberal and lightweight and are trying to win back Putin’s trust.
But it’s unclear whether he would triumph in a power struggle if Putin is forced to resign.
It comes amid speculation about Putin’s deteriorating health, with claims he’s battling blood, thyroid or abdominal cancer and suspected he has early-stage Parkinson’s disease.
The Russian president will be “incapacitated” within three months and replaced by a coup, a former MI6 spy has claimed.
Christopher Steele says Putin may have just months to live and says there are already signs he is in poor health.
He told BBC Radio 4’s The World at One Show: “I don’t see him [Putin] be in power for more than three to six months from now,” Steele said.
“There are signs his health is declining initially, which will be a factor in that.
“And if what we’re being told by the CIA and others and our own sources is true, then it looks like he could become incapacitated over such a period.
