Volodymyr Zelensky pleads for the support of the musicians at the Grammys “but not for silence”.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the musicians in a special message that was presented at the 64th

The Ukrainian president said music will “break” the silence caused by the destruction of Russian forces across his country.

It comes as the Kremlin’s attack on Ukraine rages on and the civilian death toll continues to rise, with the United Nations putting the death toll in the thousands.

Mr. Zelensky appeared via video link before a special performance of John Legend, with words by Lyuba Yakimchuk, a poet from Donbass, Ukraine.

“The war. What is more in contrast to music. The silence of destroyed cities and killed people,” Zelenskyy said.

“Our children draw falling rockets, not shooting stars. Over 400 children were injured and 153 children died. And we’ll never see her draw.

“Our parents are happy to wake up in the morning. In air raid shelters. But alive.

“Our loved ones don’t know if we’ll be together again. War doesn’t let us choose who survives and who remains in perpetual silence.

He continued, “Our musicians wear body armor instead of tuxedos.

“They sing for the wounded. In hospitals. Even for those who can’t hear it, but the music will break through anyway.

“We defend our freedom to live, to love, to sound.

“On our land we are fighting against Russia, which brings terrible silence with its bombs. The dead silence.

“Fill the stillness with your music. Complete it today. To tell our story. Tell the truth about this war on your social networks, on TV. Support us in any way you can. But not silence.

“And then peace will come. The war is destroying all our cities… They are already legends. But I have a dream that they live. And free.

“Free like you on the Grammys stage.”

The Recording Academy later tweeted, “Our hearts and our stage hold a special place for the people of Ukraine.”

Mr Zelensky was rumored to be appearing at the Oscars last weekend, with Amy Schumer revealing she pitched the idea to the organizers, but he didn’t.
