KYIV, Ukraine – As Russian troops surrounded Kyiv, Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, appeared on camera again on Saturday to provide evidence of his continued presence in the country’s capital, praising his stronger and more manned army and begging Western countries for more support.
“We successfully fended off and repelled the enemy attacks,” Zelensky said in a video posted around noon local time, the latest of several speeches he made. published. “War continues in many cities and counties in our state, but we know that we protect our country, our land, our children’s future.”
He said the Ukrainian army still controls the capital and key nearby cities.
“The occupiers want to blockade the seat of our state power and set up their puppets here,” he said.
“We messed up their plans, they didn’t gain any advantage over us,” he added in Ukrainian. “The enemy uses everything against us: missiles, fighters, drones, artillery, armored vehicles, saboteurs, amphibious assaults. The occupiers are attacking residential areas using rocket artillery, trying to destroy energy facilities. They have very vile tactics.”
Mr. Zelensky once again asked the European Union to move forward with Ukraine becoming a member. The European Union has offered the country financial support and imposed sanctions on top Russian officials, banks and businesses in response to the Ukraine invasion.
“The Ukrainian people deserve and have the right to become a member of the European Union,” he said.
And he called on Ukrainians at home and abroad to fight for their country.
“Every Ukrainian needs to remember one thing – if you can stop and destroy the occupiers – do it!” he say. “Whoever can go back to Ukraine, come back to defend Ukraine.”
He added: “Everyone can protect Ukraine from abroad, let’s do it relentlessly, persistently and together. All friends of Ukraine who want to join the defense – come. We will give you a weapon”.
At the end of the video, Mr. Zelensky switched to Russian to thank Russian civilians for protesting the war. More than 1,800 Russians were arrested on Thursday at protests across the country. He called on the Russian people to oppose the war to avoid heavy loss of life.
He called the Russian soldiers who invaded were “thousands of victims, prisoners who simply could not understand why they were sent to Ukraine, sent to Ukraine to die, to kill others”.
“The sooner you tell your government that the war must stop immediately, the more your people will survive,” he said.
He urged all Russians to “just stop liars, lying to you, lying to us, lying to everyone, to the whole world. We need to end this war. We can live in peace, in a global peace”.
